My Tech Journey: From Corporate Databases to WordPress Websites
A few months ago, while working on a particularly complex WordPress project, I had a lightbulb moment. It made me reflect on how far I’ve come since my early days as an analyst programmer in the 1990s.
My career path has been anything but linear, leading me from building custom databases for small businesses to working with corporate giants and finally to my current passion: helping companies to thrive online with WordPress.
It’s funny that my last full-time job (other than running my own business) was over thirty years ago!
The world of technology has changed so much since I started, but that’s what makes my job so fun.
My work is one thing that has remained constant: my love for problem-solving and creating solutions that make a real difference. My passion for problem-solving and developing solutions that genuinely impact the world has remained unwavering throughout my career.
Early Days: Building the Foundations
My journey in tech began as a teenager after my dad got us an Apple 2C. I tinkered with code and learned the ins and outs of computers.
One of my first jobs was working for an ISP, but the Internet was very different from what we have now. We built pages with HTML written with Notepad. We had dialup and Altavista, and then along came Jeeves and other archaic things that only older webmasters would remember. The Internet wasn’t really a thing, and my job was kind of boring, to be honest.
In my early 20s, I landed my first job as an analyst programmer. I mainly worked with custom databases for small to medium-sized businesses.
These databases were the precursors to what we now know as CRMs, essential tools for businesses to manage customer relationships and streamline operations.
I thrived in this environment, quickly developing a reputation for my ability to translate complex business requirements into efficient and user-friendly database solutions.
This experience taught me the importance of understanding clients’ unique needs and tailoring solutions to their specific goals.
My Corporate Years
As my reputation grew, I had the opportunity to work with larger corporations, building complex intranet systems and enterprise-level databases.
These projects were challenging, but they pushed me to expand my knowledge and skills and taught me valuable lessons about systems architecture, project management, and working in large, collaborative teams.
One of the most important things I learned during my corporate years was the importance of communication and collaboration.
Building large-scale systems requires a LOT of meetings and communication with people of all different levels of knowledge, including stakeholders, developers, and end-users.
I also learned the importance of documenting processes and procedures to ensure smooth operation and maintenance of complex systems.
Rediscovering my love of the Web and all things digital
After many years in the corporate world, the internet started to take off, so I got back into Web Development.
The rise of WordPress intrigued me, and I was drawn to its flexibility, user-friendliness, and potential to empower businesses of all sizes.
I dove headfirst into WordPress, quickly becoming a skilled developer and problem-solver. My background in systems architecture gave me a unique advantage, allowing me to understand the underlying structure of WordPress and how to optimise it for performance, security, and user experience.
I also developed a passion for technical SEO, recognising the importance of making websites visible to search engines and ensuring they rank well for relevant keywords. This knowledge and my technical skills allow me to create visually appealing websites optimised for success.

I started working in web in the 90s, essentially at the start of the internet, when nobody used it. It’s changed a lot! WordPress has been my work and hobby for the last ten or so years.
When I am not working with Wordpress, I am probably tinkering with Wordpress haha.
I love learning and am constantly revising things to make my builds exceptional. I am rather obsessed with site speed and love a tidy dashboard and database.
I specialise in providing fast, focused WordPress solutions with VIP Intensives, helping businesses and entrepreneurs troubleshoot issues, implement complex builds, and optimise their sites for success. I also offer personalised 1:1 training to empower you to manage your WordPress site confidently.
I love blogging and sharing my knowledge. I write about a lot of different topics, mostly because of questions I am asked when teaching clients or when I am testing something and I can’t find any blogs that already exist on the topic.
